rababob - I'm afraid the haircut was necessary due to the rapid onset of baldyness (if that's a word)...
No need for any more photographs of TV screens. As you said the image is
saved as a jpeg onto the SD card. From there it's the easiest thing in
the world to get it onto the site. For a full explanation see my reply
to Dylan in the 'General 3DS Anticipation Thread' in the Forums.
The answer to your questions #2,3,4,6, and 7 is: yes
No. They're bucket-filled backgrounds in Painter. I got the idea from rababob... who used this technique to put his familiar blue background on his 3DS updates (see the discussion on his Judge Clarence Thomas 3DS version mii).
I like the idea of differentiating between artists' miis, since they all uploads look the same from the 3DS. Plus I'm going to take the opportunity to alter it so my old Wii-style miis are updated with their 3DS versions - rather than posting them as brand new miis. (I'll conceal the few that I did post in this way, so there won't be any duplication.) Hope no-one is annoyed by this temporary 'flood' of miis from me...
